The backend in Joomla can be really slow sometimes, and that is the biggest downside with joomla. But there is a great way to speed up Joomla administration. Thanks to (the genius) Phil Taylor and GoogleGears, there is a FREE extension. Its called "TurboGears for Joomla" and can be found here:
